What To Do When Entrepreneurial Insomnia Keeps You Up

Do
you ever get so excited about the opportunities and
ideas that exist in the business world that you can't get a
good night's sleep? If you're an entrepreneur, chances are
you've had these types of sleepless nights.
Many a night I will try my best to fall asleep at a decent
hour, but eventually, I'll give up, and get back on the
computer. It would seem like the logical thing to do (if
you can't sleep, might as well work, right?), but it can
really affect your health.
Throw into the mix that I'm a biological night owl, and
sometimes it's only when the light of dawn breaks through
the window do I realize I better get some sleep.
Want to talk about consequences? The next day becomes a
dazed, dream state, where many times a nap is required to
be even partially functional. So how does an entrepreneur
combat this problem?
I talked to one of my friends about this, a wealthy
entrepreneur who has more energy than almost anyone I know.
And he told me something very interesting to try.
He told me whenever he gets the uncontrollable
entrepreneurial fever, and he knows he needs a good night's
sleep (which is every night) he simply places a notebook
and a pen next to his bed. Then he tries to go to sleep.
As all of those thoughts and ideas rush through his head,
he simply turns over, turns on the light, and writes them
down. That's it. So why is this helpful?
My friend, who has studied this matter closely, points to
2 reasons why this exercise helps to put your mind (and
body) at rest. First, as a busy business person, bedtime
is probably the first time (since getting OUT of bed in the
morning) that you've had any peace and quiet the whole day!
Think about it. For the first time all day you aren't on
the phone, writing copy, or putting out fires. So your
subconscious mind can finally relax, take a breath, and...
push all of your subconscious thoughts to the forefront.
Since these are usually your best ideas, you get excited
and cannot sleep.
Second, these ideas are "open loops" (to use Neuro
Linguistic Programming terms) because the ideas are not
immediately actionable. Literally, you are lying in bed
thinking about all the things you COULD be doing. It's no
wonder you can't sleep!
When you write these ideas down in your notepad, you are
closing that open loop by assuring your subconscious mind,
"Don't worry buddy, I got it on paper. You can relax and go
to sleep!"
Do this enough times and your mind will begin to come to
peace, knowing that all of those great ideas won't go to
waste. They're all right beside you in your notebook! Only
then will you be able to get the good, deep sleep you need
and deserve.

The type of
memory we're referring to is called RAM (Random Access Memory). RAM is
the temporary working memory that your operating system, programs and
documents use to keep your computer running. Over the years, the
amounts of RAM that most computers have has grown considerably. It
used to be that 32 or 64 MB was plenty, but these days, if you don't
have at least 512 MB, you're going to think your computer died.
When you're using
different applications on your computer all at the same time (for
example, you're checking your e-mail, listening to some music, loading
a game, etc.), they are all fighting for enough RAM to be able to run
for you. As you can see, if you don't have enough RAM to accommodate
all your programs, you're going to run into some problems. Your
computer sometimes grabs some of your virtual memory to keep things
going, but that is much less efficient than actually having the right
amount of RAM on your computer. Now if you only run one program at a
time, you shouldn't have a problem, but if your computer has been
acting funny lately, adding some more RAM should put it back in top
performance.
