Is Your
Browser Secure? Test It Now
Our browsers play
a very important and central role as we wander around the Internet.
We read our mail, news and newsletters, sign up for stuff, shop, do
our banking, pay bills, etc. through the browser. As we do all this
and more, information about us is accumulating in our browser History
and Cache. So we must ask ourselves, how secure is the browser I am
using? Well, today we are going to test your browser, and try to
answer that question.
The security
company Scanit has a browser test that will put your browser through
up to 13 tests, and then give you a report. The test is easy to use;
there is nothing to download or install. To begin, go here:
http://bcheck.scanit.be/bcheck/index.php (In case you are
wondering, the .be country code refers to Belgium.) Towards the
bottom of the first screen you will see your browser name, version and
your operating system. MSIE is Microsoft Internet Explorer. Beneath
that you will see a choice of three tests to run. I chose “Run all
available tests”. Click “Start the test”, and read the warning box
carefully. Click OK, then click OK again to accept the Bookmark or
Favorite. The test will take a few minutes, so please be patient.
If your browser
crashes, do not worry. Close all windows, relaunch your browser and
head right back to the Scanit page using that Favorites link you just
made. It will ask you if your browser crashed. Click Yes. Click
“Continue the Test” to finish it off. You will then see the results.
A green check mark means the browser passed that test, and a red X
means a problem or vulnerability that you need to fix. Scroll down a
bit and you will see an explanation of the problems, and
recommendations on how to fix them. Fix each individual
vulnerability, then run the test again. Your browser must pass all
the tests.
If you have more
than one browser on your computer (as I do), test each one in turn.
When testing Internet Explorer 7 or Firefox and the browser crashes,
forcing you to go back to Scanit as explained above, you may at some
point just see a blank screen. If this happens to you, click the
Browser Security Test tab in your browser.
You can test
other browsers besides IE and Firefox, of course, such as Opera.
There are no tests for Mac browsers at the moment. Once your tests
and repairs are completed, you will be just a bit safer on the Web.
Now please forward this entire newsletter to all your friends, with a
note to run the browser test right away!
