Computers: A Basic Introduction
«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»
When you mention the word "technology," most people think
about computers. Virtually every facet of our lives has some
computerized component. The appliances in our homes have
microprocessors built into them, as do our televisions. Even
our cars have a computer. However, the computer that
everyone thinks of first is typically the personal computer,
or PC.
Computer, a "general purpose" tool, has a microprocessor to
work efficiently. There are different parts of a computer
system: a hard disk, a modem, etc. that works together. A
PC can be used for different purposes. It can be used for
sending e-mail, playing games, browsing the web, etc.
Let take a closer look at the main components of the PC or
typical desktop computer.
Central processing unit (CPU): The microprocessor is the
"brain" of the computer, similar to a human brain. The CPU
keeps an eye on everything that a computer does.
Memory: It is used to hold data because it is directly
connected to the microprocessor. There are several specific
types of memory in a particular computer system, like RAM.
Random Access Memory: It stores the information that a
computer is currently working with.
Read-only memory (ROM): A permanent type of memory storage
used by the computer for important data that does not
change.
Basic input/output system (BIOS): It is the boot software
program on a PC, and controls the computer when the
computer is first turned on.
Caching: Helps to store frequently used data in extremely
fast RAM connected directly to the CPU.
Virtual memory: Space on a hard disk used to temporarily
store data and swap it in and out of RAM as needed.
Motherboard: This is the main board in the computer that has
the processor, the RAM, the BIOS ROM, the timing and
control, the interrupt and direct memory access hardware and
the keyboard interface on it which are connected to it
through the secondary connection.
Soundcard: A peripheral device in the form of a card used
for producing sound and music. Although PCs come with a
built-in speaker, it was usually tied to the CPU and does
not do a good job of reproducing complex sounds. All
soundcards have connectors for speakers.
Hard drive: This is the main storage device of a computer.
It stores information including the OS that allows you to
access it all. Most common OS for PCs is Microsoft Windows.
And Apple computers use the Macintosh operating system.
Other Drives: Floppy drives and CD drives are a couple other
drives, which read information, stored on disks. Computer
software and operating systems are maintained with the help
of these drives. All are essential for a complete computer
system.
Every average computer includes the above components.
Even though there are many different systems, and configur-
ations, it is difficult to imagine our lives without them.

"How To Adjust Window Size"
=========================
Windows allows you to customize a window to any width or height.
The secret to making these adjustments lies with the title bar's
restore button.
Here's the easiest method to make adjustments.
Step 1.
If your window occupies the entire desktop in a maximized state,
click the restore button to reduce the size of the window. This
button is located at the top right of your screen and resembles 2
boxes, one on top of the other.
See how the active window has been reduced in size? See all the
color around the window? That's the desktop showing from behind.
Now we'll adjust the active window even more
Step 2.
To adjust the size vertically or horizontally, pass your cursor
over the border of the active window. You'll see it change into a
two headed arrow. When you see the arrow change, click and hold
the left mouse button while dragging the window to a new size.
Releasing the mouse button sets the window to its new size.
To change the horizontal and vertical size simultaneously, place
your cursor in the lower right hand corner of the active window.
It changes to a diagonal two headed arrow: Click, hold, and
drag to change size.
To return the window to its full screen size, click the maximize
button. This is the button resembling a single box at the top
right.
Easy Peasy eh?
