1.) BIZ
THOUGHT

The BizThought here is brought to you by
Stupidman. He newsletters are hilarious
and to my amazement very, very true. Try
looking through stupidman's eyes at his twisted,
funny antics of the internet world:
Barking Up The Wrong AOL Tree
One of our subscribing friends, sent me a
link to
www.nomoreaolcds.com .
This is a site created by several
bright lads with too much time on their hands dedicated to
ending the AOL practice of filling up mailboxes and city
dumps with cds promising thousands of hours of Internet use
as long as the benefit is reaped within the first month.
(I've been meaning to tell AOL the maximum hours in a month
is only 744 but I haven't got around to it yet.)
The "nomore" site is attractive,
has pictures of a garage
filled with cds, a dog eating a cd and other pictures of
creative destruction. They give out awards to people who
have shipped the most cds to them and when I checked they
said they had received over 81,000 cds.
Their goal is to acquire 1,000,000 cds and
take them to AOL
headquarters.
Mrs. Stupidman had AOL before I ever cared
about the
Internet. To this day she still rants about the popups,
banners and how hard it was too uninstall. If I had to
guess I'd say she detests AOL more than male chauvinist
pigs. (Doesn't that prove that I'm not one?)
As a publisher, I don't like the AOL
filter system or the
high number of bounces I get on AOL (and it's subsidiaries)
subscribers.
So I can think of a number of reasons why
somebody might
want to go after AOL but not because of their cd mailing
practices.
Think of the revenue that would not be
received by the
postal service. What about the great exercise the postal
workers get by lugging around all those bags of cds in
little metal boxes? The benefits don't stop there.
Some people use them for coasters and
throwing disks. Little
children can draw nearly perfect circles by tracing around
the exteriors. Crafters can use them as wheels for
vehicular art objects. The shiny side makes a handy little
mirror.
Having seen "Trading Places" a
couple of times, I could
imagine somebody decorating another family's home in AOL
theme. Say an entire room, with cds glued to walls and
ceiling with the reflecting side exposed and a lovely cd
mobile as the centerpiece for the room. Maybe some front and
back porch wind chimes as motif accents.
Living in Oklahoma, I'm particularly
sensitive to the well
being of oil producers and as I believe the cds are
petroleum based their creation helps the economies of
Oklahoma, Texas and Louisiana.
I'm sure I've neglected many other
opportunities to benefit
from the all too frequent gift that appears in the mailbox
but I'm counting on you to come up with more.
If you agree with me, go to the site of
these misguided
youths and help me convince them to stop their unwarranted
assault on AOL. If you don't agree with me (shame on you)
go to their site and read their rants (they are great).
(For ease of navigation, the rant section is titled "You
know what p____s me off?".
P.S. While writing this I looked at
Greased Lightning's
collection and discovered that the deal
is currently
1025 hours for 45 days. I feel
much better knowing
that by staying on the computer 22.78
hours
a day a new subscriber can take full
advantage of the
AOL offer.
P.P.S. Mrs. Stupidman says if you
don't buy my book I'll
have to go back to work.
I don't want to go back to
work. I want to write
articles. Please, please buy
my book. You don't
even have to read it, just buy it.

2.) EDITORIAL
___________________
Hello Exchangers,
A "Warm Welcome" to all our new subscribers.
We had a GREAT response to my editorial
the other
day concerning ezine publication via a website and/or
autoresponder link. I would like to thank each and every
one of you who sent me your comments. Basically
everyone had the same thing to say. And that was,
since they love to read our ezine, they would take the
time to click on the link. If it were just any ezine, then
that was another story. One person, who is a publisher, said
it was a real bad idea. She knows for a fact that readership
is not nearly as high and ads are not read nearly as much.
I tend to agree totally.
Here is my opinion...
There is NO WAY I will do this. WHY? Because LIFE is
an obstacle and this is just one of them. If it is not these
darn filters, then it will be something else. Plus the people
who WANT to read my ezine do receive it. People who have
filters on and do not get it obviously don't want it, because I
do not receive any emails claiming they do not get the publication.
So there you have it. You WILL be
receiving each publication via
email with no links to click to read it. I am confident that
this is
a good decision. I also feel that the ezines who do use this
method will be switching back in no time.
Onto some business...
Please remember, if your browser does not support HTML, OR,
if you are getting plain text and would prefer HTML then let us know,
so we can switch you over to the other version. Just drop me an email

DON'T SHOOT THE MESSENGER
by Theresa Cahill
«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤
Recently our website had one of the
"gurus" test out our
Solo Sweepstakes program. Frankly, it was sort of exciting
to know we were about to be, or could possibly be, put on
the hot seat. We didn't hold our breath LOL, but truly it was
a kick!
With this order, as with every single
order we've ever had
and ever will, we wished this advertiser the very best. We
like to help people succeed!
The results of his "experiment"
because admittedly that's
what it was, were "just less than break even" at best.
I guess for some of us a having 1 person
out of 130 buy
a $97 product might appear to be nothing. But that translates into
0.76% conversion rate. Not too many of us ever hit that high -
especially not the first time out.
Let's also consider that this was a
totally cold market.
Most of us would consider that to be, well, satisfying
by way of a return on our investment - especially ordering
only one group, trying only one ad, and running it only
one time. The advertiser didn't quite see it from my point
of view, but I also know we weren't totally flamed either -
and I thank you for that *smile!*.
Positive results...
On the plus side, his experience by
tracking his ad showed
us that a feature we thought to be a plus, sending traffic
physically to a website, definitely works for some but not
for others. Yep he has the numbers to prove it - and so
should all of us! - so we now offer free ad tracking and we
set it up for you.
Okay then, let's take one possible look at
why a $119 order
generated only one $97 sale.
First, this was not targeted advertising.
This was the
same solo ad sent to six well-known and respected
ezines of varying interests, styles, and formats to run
one time - and basically (because, hey lets face it) hope
for the best.
The solo that was chosen as the
"guinea pig" had the
subject line: Ezine Publishers & eBook Authors.
Okay then, this is a very specific, narrow
ad, sent to
six ezines with a wide-range of readers. Hmmmm....
My first impression is that this sort of
program would
have received better attention as a simple 6 line ezine
ad - well placed in numerous ezines. We have over 150
of those to choice from, broken into interesting and lively
groups and it costs less than this solo. Numerous
advertisers return to advertise on a steady basis (thank
you!) so I'd say it's safe to say it must work.
Know your market. Learn what works best
and where!
Most of us don't have the luxury of
relying on our names
to assist with sales. Another harsh but true reality - which
leads me now down the inevitable road where I say, like
I always say (over and over because this IS the truth, and
I believe we all know it), the responsibility of sales rests in
YOUR hands. Plain and simple fact.
If it is, as these big guys have you
believe, easy enough to
sell virtually anything online, it is very interesting to note
that one of the major "themes" of software programs and
program recommendations by others IS how to put a good
salesletter or ezine or ezine/solo ad together. I've used
them myself with tremendous results - for the right
situations.
They also let you know in no uncertain
terms that what you
SAY and HOW you say it will make or break your sale -
and to believe that the right words in virtually any market
will sell virtually anything to anybody.
Hmmmm... okay...
Perhaps the choice of product?
Take a look at the testimony on our solo
sales page. This
wonderful woman returns on a regular basis, having had
fantastic results with what she was selling - and we have
many, many others. She found what works for her, and
she runs with it! Different products...
It all depends on what you are selling,
when you are
selling it, and how you get that across to your fellow
readers. Plain truth.
There also is no denying that the ultimate
responsibility
for anything in this world, including your own advertising,
rests with YOU and only you. Big or small, you.
Look closely at your program or product,
your overall
market type, and above all else - your ad - decide where
and how to promote and get out there and do it! Discover
what works for you and your products - no one can tell
you that - not for 100% fact - because they don't know
YOU.
Okay, so we've got one order, one time,
with one sale and
an almost break even accomplishment. Hey, I'd say not
bad!
Advertise. And then do it again and again
and again.
Ezine publishers are there to help. Just ask!
Longevity. One shot wonders are few and far apart.
Personally name brand yourself, they've done it.
And hang in there with integrity.
Just don't shoot the messenger.

Windows Won't Start
Every once in awhile, your system freezes
and the only way you
can get out of it, is to turn off your computer. This is of
course should be avoided at all costs, and you should always
first try to depress the Ctrl Key, the Alt Key and the Delete
Key, all at the same time, to try to shut down the offending
program.
If this doesn't work, and your only option
is to turn off your
computer, you may experience difficulties when you try to restart
Windows. If Windows just won't start, and it gives you options
of things you can do that don't do anything, don't despair. Your
settings probably got corrupted and need to be restored.
When the computer starts you will get a
message at some point
like "Press the Delete Key to Enter Setup". Different
computers
do it different ways so there is no magic formula I can give.
The main thing is to get into "Setup".
Once you get into "Setup" be
extremely careful, as you could do
quite a bit of harm to your system. Look around and find
something that says "Restore presets to defaults" (or
something
similar) and select that. Most of the time this will solve your
problem and Windows will now start normally.
This is a good tip to keep in your
notebook.
