"The Money Is In The List"

I just got back from Ron LeGrand's recent Internet
Marketing Bootcamp and we all had a blast. Ted
Ciuba and I did the whole first day of the seminar
and led people step-by-step in how to start their
own Internet businesses.
Attendees were taught during the next two days how
to drive traffic to their web sites, how to build
web sites that sell, how to write effective ad copy,
how to build customer lists, how to do joint ventures,
and more.
One thing that kept coming up again and again from
every single speaker at the seminar was the absolute
necessity of building your own opt-in email list.
The money is in the list.
Some of the speakers sell their own products. Some
just do joint venture selling. Others only did
reselling for other companies. The one common
thread through every speaker's presentation was
that they had one major goal more important than
anything else they did online...
We all build opt-in email lists.
The money is in the list.
A major mistake being made by most beginners online
is to sign-up with an affiliate program, and then
spend time or money promoting that affiliate program.
Sure, you could earn a little money this way. You
may gain some valuable Internet experience.
You won't be building "value" in your long-term
business. You also won't be getting maximum return
on your investment of time or money.
A much better approach would be to put up your own
web site to collect email leads...and then promote
the affiliate program's product to anyone who signs
up for your list.
The benefit this gives you is that you will still have
those email subscribers and can promote another good
valuable product next week or next month. You won't
be earning money off your list just one time. You'll be
earning multiple streams of Internet income from one
marketing effort.
The money is in the list.
The list is just as valuable if you create and sell
your own products. Statistics show that the average
customer needs five or more contacts before they
purchase from you.
How likely is it they'll visit your web site five
times on their own? It's not very likely, is it?
So, your number one goal should be to get them to
give you their email on their very first visit so
you can follow-up as long as you need to make the
sale.
Let's do the arithmetic on this for a moment...
You sell a product from your web site and
are able to sell 2% of your visitors a $30
product...This would mean every visitor to your
web site is worth 60 cents.
Instead of selling directly, you decide to just
collect email addresses and are able to sign-up
30% of your visitors into a free opt-in email
list. You then prepare a 5 email follow-up system
and sell 5% of them the $30 product.
At this point you would be at 45 cents per visitor
(30% of 100 would be 30 and 5% paid $30). This is
only the beginning though. Next week you sell a
product and get additional profits. The next week
you sell another product. You're not limited to
just that first sale when you've gotten their email
address.
The average subscriber is worth $2 to $20 per year
in additional profits to an Internet business. This
is way more than what most web sites earn from just
having a product to sell on their web site.
Which one would you rather have...60 cents today
or $5 every year? Which business do you think will
make more money and still be here 5 years from now?
The money is in the list.
Change your mindset. Your most valuable business
asset is not your computer. It's not the brand
new fancy do-dad you sell. It's not your office.
Your most valuable business asset is your list.
One caution: This whole article is about opt-in email
only...which is simply defined as people who choose to
give you their email address of their own free will so
that you can follow-up or send them some type of emails
in the future. This is the exact opposite of it's evil
twin...SPAM.
Spam is when you collect email addresses through any
means other than people giving you their email. If you
bulk email to these people who haven't requested email
from you, then you could very easily lose your web hosting,
your ISP, and your online reputation. Only send email
to people who've requested to be on your list.

PINGING YOUR SITE IN DOS
Did you know there are a couple of handy routines you can
run to find out how fast your site is loading, what IP is
associated with your URL and what route to your server is
being used across the Internet? All of this can be done
through a PC user's DOS (Disk Operating System) prompt. In
Windows, choose the Start icon, and select Programs > MS-
DOS Prompt. Once you reach the prompt, type:
ping your_site.com, where your_site is the name of your site,
so for marketingtrendz.com we'd type:
ping marketingtrendz.com
This will take you on a quick journey through cyberspace to
determine how fast your site is being accessed in milliseconds.
The Ping will make four readings, then average those four to
find out how fast your site loads. Any reading under 200
milliseconds is good, under 100 is optimal. Note the IP address
of your site as well. This is the IP that your name resolves to.
Now, if you want to find out where you are being routed as
you access your site (or anyone else's) you can use the Trace
Route routine, again in DOS and type:
tracert your_name.com
This will show you the hops (to a maximum of 30) that you
take as you access your site. Some will be easy to identify,
as they show geographic locations. Don't be surprised to find
that, even if you live close to your actual server, that you
may go half way around the world to reach it. To exit DOS,
simply type "exit" at the prompt to return to Windows.
