Getting Organized TODAY!

Regardless of whether you've had your PC for a month or a year,
organization is something that affects you. I'll give you
strategies that work in the real world. No theories here!
 
Think of your PC like you would a filing cabinet. You divide up
the drawers with individual file folders, so you can find your
stuff at any time. Easy enough, eh?
 
Well, you do the same sort of thing with your computer.
But instead of a physical folder, you create virtual folders
that you can label or name.
 
Let's start with the "root" of all your folders: the C: drive.
Open Windows Explorer, and you'll see various icons listed.
In order:
 
Desktop
My Computer
3 1/2 Floppy A:
Maybe a B: drive
(C):
And then you folders under that.
 
Drive C: is your "main volume." Your primary target. The root of
everything else in your PC! It's where Windows lives, and all of
its various programs. So it's called the "root" folder.
 
The rest of the folders are like a tree that grows from the
root. Each branch can be considered a separate folder or
directory. Each branch is labeled differently, with a unique
name.
 
What's the best strategy for organization?
 
Well, let's talk about downloads for a minute. I'd suggest
creating a folder named "downloads" that lives within the root
folder (C:). Once that folder is made, you can open it during
the "Save As" portion of your download activity. While you're
looking at the "Save As" dialog window, you can create a new
folder "on the fly" to save your stuff into.
 
Once you've created a folder for your downloads, just create
additional folders within it for the programs you download.
 
You can leave the setup programs in the folders forever, or you
can move them to an off-disk backup, such as a Zip disk,
individual floppy disks, a tape backup, or other solution.

Now, let's consider the folder named "My Documents."
 
This is where you should save anything you create.
Every document, every sound file, everything. If you create
it, save it there. But don't just save your stuff into the
"My Documents" folder. The secret (if it really is a secret) is
to create additional folders within the "My Documents" folder.
 
For example, create the following:
 
My Pictures
My Recipes
My Homework
My Projects
etc.
 
Then, you can even create sub-topics or folders within those if
needed. The idea is to organize yourself as much as possible.
And best of all, when it comes time to back up your stuff, all
you have to do is back up one folder--"My Documents." All of the
sub folders will be backed up as well, automatically.
 
Every day, save your newly created work into the appropriate
folder. Day after day, month after month, year after year.
Organized and efficient, you'll thank yourself later.
 
Guaranteed!
 
Once you're organized, there's no way you can lose a file.
And if you do, there's always the Windows search applet that
comes to the rescue. But that's another mini-course altogether!
