Today's featured article is very interesting. Though it is geared more toward netscape messenger users, you never know...it could happen to any of us. So, whether you use netscape or not, you will find it very informative. Personally, I use Microsoft Outlook Express. But if it ever happens to me, at least I know alittle about what I need to do to solve the problem. I just want to let you know, that we have changed our contact information on our websites. We no longer have available our email address directly on the sites. We have replaced it with a contact form that you submit to us. Our mailing address, phone numbers, etc, is still the same and available on our websites. However, because of the harvesting software available on the net today, which literally strips email addresses on websites, we feel that it would be in our best interests to NOT make it so readily available to these monsters. So, you do have to fill out a form to contact us from the website. And we do get back to you within 24 hours. Now, personally, I use to hate when I could not find an email address on a site. Made me feel like I was being scammed or something, by NOT having the option to email the person, except for a form. But more and more, I am figuring out the truth behind these contact forms. We have nothing to hide. In fact, you have our email address in each and every edition of The OnLine Exchange. We were using a specific email address on our websites. And that is the only place we had that address. That email address is being spammed more than our other addresses, and it is because it is on our websites. I know we will never get rid of spam, but it sure does help to cut it down some. Needless to say, we are getting rid of that old address, because the spam is overwhelming, and it is a shame we have to do this. May there be light at the end of the spam tunnel. (yeah, right!) HOT OFF THE PRESS** =================================== Strange Things Happen ================================== As I make my daily 30 ft. trek from the kitchen to my faithful computer, my first cup of coffee in hand (no, not in my underwear), I'm debating my business plans for the day. Got to check my email first. Might have made a killing on that new ad I placed the other day. Besides, everybody checks their email first, don't they? The computer's up and ready to go. I never turn it off. Might not come back on. Into Netscape Messenger I go. I've been using Netscape Messenger for a few years now. Never had any problems. Always been dependable. Besides, I'm used to it. As I look to see my incoming email starting to download my hand trembles and my coffee spills. Wow! Unbelievable! 6,327 incoming emails are coming in as fast as my computer can spit them out! That must have really been a KILLER AD I wrote. I'm the greatest! I'm gonna' be RICH!!! WAIT! Those aren't emails for my ad that's coming in. Those are all the email messages I have SENT for the last four months. WHAT A BUMMER! Why are they coming back? I sent all those messages. They all were delivered. I emptied my "sent messages" folder to the "trash" folder, and deleted everything in the "trash" folder. WHY ARE THEY COMING BACK to haunt me? Finally, all the messages are downloaded. I can't figure it out. I call my ISP. The person I talk to can't figure it out either. He says I'll have to go to the ISP website and delete the messages there. I ask if he can delete the messages for me, being he's right there looking at it. Nope, not allowed to delete any customer's mail. Have to do it yourself. Okay, I go to the ISP's website to delete the messages. You can only delete 20 messages at one time! Do you have any idea how long it takes to delete 6,327 messages, 20 at a time? The day is shot. But finally things are back to normal. One week later the EXACT THING happens AGAIN! I called my ISP. This time I talked to a person who knew his business! He told me exactly what to do, and I'm gonna tell you. Hopefully, you won't ever have this problem, but if you use Netscape Messenger (it's really not bad) and this problem arises, here's what you do: (Please note that this method is for Netscape 4.7. I'm not familiar with the methods used for other versions of Netscape.) 1. In Netscape, click on "Edit" in the upper left hand corner. 2. Click on "Preferences". 3. Open "Mail & Newsgroups" by clicking on the +. 4. Click on "Mail Servers". 5. Click on "Edit" in the "Incoming mail servers" box. 6. Click on the "Pop" tab. 7. And finally, uncheck the box that says "Leave messages on server". That's it, you're done. Brain Busters _____________________ Cryptography Cryptography, the encoding of messages to render them unreadable by anyone other than their intended recipient(s), is centuries old. The "Caesar Cipher" is so named because it was used by Julius Caesar. With the advent of modern computer technology, many of these older ciphers became trivially crackable using brute-force attacks. Modern cryptography, essential to the security of computer networks, is done with complex algorithms implemented on high speed computer systems. Generally speaking, computer cryptographic tasks can be broken into two general categories: encryption and authentication. Encryption Encryption refers to the scrambling of information so that the original message can not be determined by unauthorized recipients. An encryption algorithm is applied to the message, referred to as the plaintext, and a key to produce ciphertext, which ideally appears to be random bits. A decryption algorithm converts the ciphertext back into plaintext, but only if given the correct key. Conventional, or symmetric, algorithms use the same key for both encryption and decryption. Public key algorithms use paired keys, one for encryption and another for decryption. Authentication Authentication is the verification of a message's sender. Authentication requires protecting a message so it can not be altered, usually by attaching to it a digital signature. Typically, the signature is formed by computing a hash of the message, which is encrypted using a public key cryptosystem, insuring that nobody without the proper key can generate a valid signature. Note that authentication is different from encryption, since the actual message may be completely unencrypted, and cryptography used only to validate the identify of the creator.
