                  No Credibility = No Orders

HYPE...It is the enemy of an effective web site.

Customers are suspicious by nature and don't believe
a word you say...unless you can prove it.

You may have written a wonderful ad for your product
or service, but visitors still aren't buying.  If that's the
case, then you may just need a boost in your online
credibility.

People buy based on emotion.  So, your web site
must tug on their heart strings and show them the
benefits of buying your product or service.  It has to
show them what's in it for them.

They rationalize their purchase with logic. In other
words, they buy because of your benefits, but they
only give you their credit card number after you
have thoroughly 'proven' your case.  You have to show
them the evidence that your benefits are true.

You won't see their credit card until they've seen your
credibility!

Here are 15 quick and easy ways to add credibility to
your web business:

1. Testimonials

This is one of the key components of credibility for
any web site.  You must have testimonials with their
full name, email address, or web site address if at
all possible.  You want your prospects to feel that
they could contact them for verification if needed.

If you don't currently have testimonials, then you
need to get some.  Send a free product to some well
known people in your field.  Offer them the product
free if they give you their honest opinion of it.

One testimonial from a noted and respected authority
in a field can be more powerful than 10 pages of
benefit rich ad copy...This is why celebrity
endorsements are so powerful.  One celebrity
endorsement can often turn a losing proposition into
a winner overnight.

2. About You

Tell your prospects about yourself.  Let them know who
you are.  Show them that they are not just buying from
an impersonal faceless corporation.  You are the one
guaranteeing their satisfaction.

Tell them about your background and your accomplishments
in the field.  Before someone buys from you, they want
to know for sure that you know what you are talking about.

You may even want to let them in on your family
life.  Make mention of your hobby.  Tell them about
your husband or wife.  How many kids do you have?
Even though these things may not be directly related
to what you are selling, the more your prospects get
to know you personally the better.

People like to know who they are buying from.

3. Contact Information

Give them your email address on every single page
of your web site.  Tell them to send any questions
to you and you will answer them ASAP.

Give your full address and phone number on your
web site as well.  Don't give the appearance that
you are just hiding behind a web site.  Give them
every piece of contact information possible.

Tell them to call you up personally (if this is
practical).  Give them your ICQ number if they
would like to chat online.  Use Humanclick at
http://www.humanclick.com to chat with prospects
who may have questions right on your site.

4. Third Party Certification

Are you a member of the Better Business Bureau or
any other online industry watchdog.  If so, let
your customers know about it.

People want to know that you will back up your
promises and that you won't be running off to
Hawaii on their credit card.

Showing the symbol of the BBB or any of the other
groups can help increase your credibility and
give you that boost you need for extra orders.

5. Strong Guarantee

Always post a strong guarantee to your web site.
Give them a "Free 365 DayTrial of Your Product." or
a "no worry, you don't have to decide now" guarantee.

"Order it...Try it out...Use it as often as you like
for 90 days...and then decide."

In other words, a strong no questions asked guarantee
policy gives you the ability to do a 'puppy-dog'
close where the prospect doesn't really have to
decide if the product is for them or not.

6. Domain

You must get your own domain name.  Having a domain
name gives your business that little air of permanence
that a web site on a free server just doesn't have.

With the fact that you can now reserve domain
names for as little as $5.99, I sure hope you can
afford one.  If you can't, you shouldn't be in
business.

7. Proof

Show your customers that you product works.  Show
them the scientific studies.  Show them your stock
broker's report.  Show them pictures of your own
weight loss.

If you sell search engine positioning services,
show your web site ranked number one on the search
engines.  Why should I believe you can get me ranked
number one if you aren't ranked number one yourself?

Don't just say it.  Prove it.

8. Reviews

Get unbiased reviews of your products and services.
If a magazine, newspaper, or any type of media outlet
gives you a good review of your product, request
permission to reprint it on your site.

If someone posts how wonderful your product or service
is to a newsgroup, link to it for everyone to see.  Use
a new page link though so they don't leave your web
site (a new browser page link looks like this in HTML
target="_blank").

Third party reviews are the best advertising you
can have.  This is part of the reason that every web
site should have a regular and ongoing publicity
campaign. Publicity will beat advertising hands
down every time.

9. Content

It has been said forever, "Content is King."  I will
agree with that to a point.  You must give good
content at your web site, but you have to find a way
to weave it into the selling process itself.

Content by itself is not that effective as a sales
tool.  The goal of your web site is not to figure how
much stuff you can give away for free.  The goal
is to figure out how to give stuff away which leads
your prospects to order your products or services
from you.

Give them a sample of your new book.  Show them your
articles you have written.  Give them a sample of
the product you sell.  Always make sure that the
free item leads them back to your products or
services.

10. Professional Design

Notice that I did not say gorgeous design.  I have
seen some web sites that were not that attractive
at all, but they could sell like you wouldn't
believe.

I can tell you though that I have visited sites
looking to buy a product and been totally turned
off by their unprofessional appearance.

Some major turnoffs are:
* A background color which makes the text hard to read.
* Text all centered in the middle of the page.
* Letters in All Caps.
* The text done in half a dozen different colors
* Too much clipart

Those are just a few ideas.  Just make your
web site easy to read and easy to navigate.

11. Specifics

Specifics in any type of ads always out pull generalities.
It is much better to say you have 34,500 subscribers
from 47 different countries than to say you have a
lot of subscribers from around the world.

Specific illustrations and specific examples are
much more believable than general ideas.  Don't say
that you earn almost $10,000 from your marketing idea.
Tell them you earned $9,854.34 with one idea in less
than 72 hours.

12. Tell me why

Tell me why and then I will buy.  Your prospects
always want to know why you are making such a
wonderful offer to them (you are making a wonderful
offer, aren't you).  The old adage "If something
is too good to be true, it usually is" rings
strong in your prospect's ears.

Tell them why your prices are so low.  You had
1,000 delivered when you only wanted 100.  You
have to sell 8,000 items before tax day.  Your
product is digital, so you can deliver it at
virtually no cost.

Give them the exact reason you can offer such a
deal and why no one else is doing it.

13. Reveal Your Faults

You have loaded your prospect with benefits.
You have told them everything they are going to
get out of your product.  They are up and ready
to buy.  Now, give them the final answer they
need.

Tell them what you don't like about your product.
Your credibility will go through the roof when
you admit something about your product.  I am
positive your product isn't perfect.

14. Avoid Hype

Don't exaggerate your claims.  Write your web
site just like you would write a letter to
a close friend.  Better yet, when you write
your letter, pick out a friend of yours and
write it to them personally.

People online will spot hype and if you
exaggerate at all, then everything else you say
is immediately suspect.  You lose all credibility
if your web site isn't believable.

15. Accept Credit Cards

This should be a given, but if you want to
do business in the 21st century you must
accept all major credit cards.  Don't think
for one minute that people will be fine with
sending you a check or money order in the mail.
The moment you accept credit cards, it gives
your whole business a little more respect.
