Is YOUR Business Plan a Lethal Booby Trap?
Now is the time to review your business plan for 1999 and for the new millennium. Now the question is, Do YOU have a business plan? That's the
critical factor. A survey of more than 20,000 small businesses suggest that
only 3% to 5% do. What we found is that, when asked "do you have a business
plan?", between 15% and 35% said "yes". But when asked "is
it a formal, written document" - because 'I've got one in my head' doesn't count- the
numbers dropped dramatically. But that's not the most alarming fact to emerge
from the survey. If your business plan is like most we see, it's not just
irrelevant and useless. It's downright DANGEROUS! The secret of success in small business is exquisitely simple: do ONLY the
right things, for ONLY the right reasons. That way, you'll never make mistakes. That leads us to two questions:
1. What are the right things?
2. What are the right reasons for doing them?
The Great Small Business Dilemma is this: You either know what the right things and right reasons are, or you don't. There's no point trying to guess.
Management by Guess-work is like "Reverse Russian Roulette" (where
only one chamber of the gun is empty!). The outcome is utterly predictable, even if
you get lucky a few times. Because Management by Guesswork is so obviously risky to most small business
owners, they usually opt for the other major small business management method
- Management by Imitation.
You either:
1) Just play follow-the-leader, doing what everyone else in small business
does when confronted with a management function or decision for which you
don't have the know how or the answers. This approach defies all logic. Since
90% of small businesses fail in the first 10 years, common sense alone should
tell us that doing what everyone else does is a sure-fire recipe for disaster! You'd be better off doing the exact opposite! (But, since ignorance
reins supreme in both methods, no-one knows what the opposite is, either.) Or 2)Mistakenly think that whatever BIG Business does has automatic relevance
to small business. That notion is fatally flawed. Small business owners rarely know what to do - or why to do it - when it comes to actually running
a business. So they do what they see BIG business do, despite the reality
that, when small business knows what to do, BIG business literally can't
compete with it. So small business ends up handing its unbeatable competitive
edge (and its own head) to BIG business - on a silver platter! Part of the
problem is the "training" and "advice" available to small
business. How often is that "training" and "advice" offered by organizations and
people who know only BIG Business methods? And who teach those methods because they know no
better? Be wary. BIG Business methods tend to be broad-brush, wasteful and
costly. Small business can't afford the kind of resources these methods demand. In most instances we come across, they don't need them, either. In
the next issue of the MM2000 E-zine, we'll explore these differences, and
outline small business strategies, tools and methods that are geared to the
needs of small business, with high leverage, low cost and quick, simple implementation.

Here are some tips and tricks I have picked up on the internet:
When you find something that breaks even or makes a small profit, why not refine it so it becomes really profitable?
BANNER TIPS-
create a banner that people will click on
Show a benefit to the client in the title (don't explain everything your business has to offer, but offer a benefit). Try to analyze who to target for
your banner. If you don't target the right people, you will be wasting your
time.
Try making part of the banner look like a link (blue with underlining on the text) so people did not mistake the banner for a regular graphic on a site.
Animated click buttons attract attention . Also, make it clear to
click on the banner if a person wants the information or service offered. If you don't
tell people to click on your banner, it's just another pretty picture for
them to look at while they are surfing.
Try making your banner smaller in size with a solid background, such as white to blend in with the page. More people will see it if it loads faster. A
banner that simple is a button with your wording by it usually will get more
results.
Always have "Click Here" on your banner to increase response
dramatically...you literally have to tell people what to do... don't just assume they will
click... tell them to click.
Tips for placing ads
Fact: People who are interested will read everything you have to offer, so explain every detail there is about your product/service in your ad.
This key to success is to take the fear out of buying. The more people know about you and your product, the more comfortable they feel purchasing from
you.

Cross Promote Online For Maximum Profits

Cross promoting is when two or more businesses promote their products or services together. I try to find businesses
that have the same target audience, but are not in direct competition with my business. Doing cross promotions
with other businesses increases your profits, sales, and beat your competition.
You can find businesses to cross promote all over the Internet. Participate in e-mail discussion groups, online
forums and newsgroups that deal with your target audience. Subscribe to e-zines that deal with your targeted audience.
Note on your Web site or e-zine that you are interested in cross promoting your products and services. Search in
your favorite web directories and search engines to find targeted businesses.
Cross promoting has many benefits. Save money by sharing the advertising and marketing costs. Save time
when both businesses share the workload. You can offer your customers new products and services. Get referrals
from the other business' clients. Receive valuable information from the business.
Once you find a business you would like to cross promote with simply e-mail them your proposal. Tell the business
owner the benefits of the cross promotion. Explain to him or her why it would be a win/win situation for both of your
businesses. Give them a lot of compliments about their business, Web site, products and services. Using all three
methods above will greater your chance for a profitable
